Sandakan Turtle Spotting

Written by Tropical Sky No comments

Watching turtles struggle on to the beach and lay their eggs is one of the most amazing wildlife experiences you can have.  You can do it on the Island of Sandakan. …….

Sandakan has chalets for about 60 people. Rooms are basic, but they’ve all got air conditioning and en-suite bathrooms.  The food is honest and well cooked.  Sandakan is small and there’s not much in the way of facilities really, but the coral sandy beach is fabulous.    It’s very exciting to see a female turtle beginning to make its nest up close.  A ranger collects the eggs for the hatchery to stop the local monitor lizard population from decimating the eggs.  If you’re lucky, you’ll get to help by laying the eggs in a mesh tube to protect them or even release some hatchlings at the edge of the beach.   As you settle down for a beer at the end of the day, you can still hear the “swish, swish” of sand as mother turtles continue to dig holes for the next generation.    A night on Turtle Island is definitely a privilege.

Coco Joes - The Best in Poolside Dining

Written by Tropical Sky No comments

This is most definitely not your average pool-side bar!  Coco Joes is the restaurant of the Tanjung Aru hotel in Kots Kinabalu, Borneo, Malaysia.   It punches well above its weight with Asian or international cuisine, barbeques and fantastic fresh local seafood.

Best dish?  Probably the Coco Joe Steamer! Based on a spicy tom yam soup, you add prawns, squid, fish balls, beef and chicken to your own taste and let it steam for two minutes at your table.  Then add the greens, noodles, bean sprouts that you can liven up with chilli and garlic sauce.   Simply Gorgeous!   This explosion on your taste buds is probably one of the main reasons for indulging in our Explore Borneo Holiday!

Mini guide to Malaysia

Written by Tropical Sky No comments

For those looking for somewhere a little bit special, Malaysia makes for a truly memorable luxury tropical holiday destination.

Great beaches, tantalizing food and a diverse culture make Malaysia the perfect option for both couples and families. As well as amazing luxury resorts the country has so much to see and do - visit orangutans, dive into warm clear waters to witness a world of tropical marine life, trek high into the rainforest, taste an authentic barbequed Malaysian satay dish or simply relax on an idyllic white-sand beach.

Langkawi
Langkawi is perfect for beach lovers. With its pristine waters offering great diving and snorkelling conditions, water-lovers will be in their element. Sit on the beach and relax with a good book and when you feel like exploring, the island’s rural charm is sure to appeal.

Head for stunning resorts like the Westin Langkawi Resort & Spa and the Pelangi Beach Resort, which both offer fantastic sports and great spa facilities to pamper yourself after a day of activity.

Penang
With influences from all over Southeast Asia, the food in Penang is a real treat and one of Southeast Asia’s top destinations for foodies. Sample some chicken satay, freshly barbecued on skewers, or make your taste buds tingle with a bowl of laksa soup spiced with fresh chilies and onion.

The island has some magical resorts like Batu Ferringhi, blessed with great beaches, lively nightmarkets and colourful food courts.

Couples can also be pampered in the fantastic spa facilities available at the top class resorts such as the Shangri-La Rasa Sayang.

Borneo
Borneo is for the wild at heart – with age-old tropical rainforests and rugged interiors, there is adventure to be found at almost every turn. For the truly adventurous, conquer the great summit of Mount Kinnabalu in Sabah - the fourth tallest summit in Southeast Asia.

Along with the stunning scenery is also a whole world to be discovered underwater as the area boasts several superb dive sites.

Borneo is justly famous for its orangutans. In fact these rare and intelligent primates can only be found there and on the neighboring island of Sumatra.

Although orangutans are now sadly endangered, conservation centers like Sepilok are working hard to protect these wonderful creatures. Visitors can see the orangutans up close and learn about the centre’s rehabilitation efforts.

Recommended luxury resorts to head to in Borneo include the Shangri-La Tanjung Aru and Sutera Harbour.

Kuala Lumpur
Modern and elegant, Kuala Lumpur is for the sophisticated traveler. Shop till you drop in the numerous upmarket malls, marvel at the Petronas Twin Towers and dine in the stylish restaurants located around the foot of the towers.

There are some great accommodation options in KL like the Shangri-La Kuala Lumpur and Equatorial Hotel, both centrally located in the heart of the city and featuring a great range of activity and restaurant options.
